- Safety Thoughts Every Morning
Is
your staff thinking about their safety today?
What
can you do to remind them?
The Problem
"I guess I just wasn’t thinking", is a common admission of accident
victims who forgot or broke a rule and were hurt. Many production and maintenance
crews start their shifts with a daily 10 minute safety toolbox talk by the foreman.
The purpose is to maintain a high level of safety awareness. Such daily sessions
are an essential element of many plant safety programs.
Many workers, on the other hand, are generally not organized into crews,
they may travel, and usually don't all start the workday at the same
time. The idea of gathering around a leader every morning for a few
minutes to discuss safety is simply not practical. But their need for
a high level of safety awareness is just as great.
One Solution
To meet this need, why not publish a safety thought for the day that arrives
on their desktop every morning via E-mail, or appears on in-house web sites
that they frequent?
What are Safety Thoughts?
Safety Thoughts are brief essays in plain English about some practical
or philosophical aspect of safety in our daily lives. Frequent subjects
are personal responsibility, common safety rules, housekeeping, accidents
and near misses, safety at home, safe driving, and appropriate aphorisms.

Principles
We define workplace safety as getting home from the job in at least
as good condition as you were when you left in the morning. With this
in mind, the following principles form the basis for the messages:
- Safety is the most important thing,
- All Accidents are preventable,
- There is no job or task worth getting hurt over,
- We are our brother's (and sister's) keepers, we are all in this
together,
- We can learn from each other's mistakes,
- Safety is a both an individual and a management responsibility,
- Off the job safety is equally important as on the job safety,
- Zero accidents is an achievable goal,
- People are important - numbers and statistics measure their success,
- Safety does not have to be boring, sad, or depressing,
- Safety is always personal.
Are the messages effective?
Daily safety reminders by themselves will not prevent accidents. In
any safety program, it is not possible to estimate the effectiveness
of any individual component. On the other hand, being greeted by a fresh
safety message every morning can be an important element for developing
a high level of awareness . They are more effective than posters and
bulletin board slogans and they are less likely to become "wallpaper"
because they are fresh every day
Available on CD-ROM
A CD-ROM of over 250 messages is availbale, enough for a year's worth
of daily reminders for your staff. Local management your location can
copy, tailor them to your site and resend them to the staff every morning
for less than $0.50 per day! Or they may be posted on your company intranet.
